The Sage [Re-Release]

A song by Nancy Shadlock... and Hafiz
2

So many of you loved this song, so I wanted to send it out again to the new folks who might have missed it! Apparently my soulful voice is soothing in these trying times. Peace be with you all!

The Small man, builds cages, for everyone he knows!

That line in the Hafiz poem gets me every time! Both, because it causes me to pause and think about where I’m building cages for others in my life… and also because of the times we are living in, and feeling so powerfully the effects of small men building cages for others.

Reading Hafiz poetry has become a spiritual practice for me in the last decade. I used to think I couldn’t hear from God via a Muslim mystic… but I’m pretty sure this 14th century Persian poet is a very strong conduit of the Divine. I’m thankful for Daniel Ladinsky who translated many of them into English for us. My fave is his book: A Year with Hafiz.

A few months ago, I was on a mini retreat with my dear friend

(who is also an amazing poet -check out her substack). As I was reflecting on this poem and all it brought up in me and in the world… I created a song with Hafiz’ words, and my own.

I was invited to a campfire coffeehouse recently and shared the song with them. They asked me where they could get it… so I wanted to record it and put it out on the world wide web, so more people could enjoy it.

I hope it touches you and cause you to pause for 4 minutes and ponder.

Sending much love!
~Nancy
